Growing up in Kansas City bar-b-que was an essential part of life. It is an identifier of the culture within Kansas City. After finding myself home for a month, for the first time in a year, I decided to explore my city and again, and the easiest way to do that was through bar-b-que. So, I embarked on this photography project as a way to explore bar-b-que, myself, and my city. I visited a wide variety of bar-b-que joints to create this project from the traditional restaurants such as Arthur Bryant’s and Joe’s (formerly known as Oklahoma Joes) to more modern locales such as Q39 and homestyle joints such as LC’s. What I found in each location was the same sense of community. Wherever you go in Kansas City bar-b-que serves as a powerful equalizer.
